The Gospel of the Most Holy Name of Jesus
“And after eight days were accomplished, that the Child should be circumcised, His Name was called JESUS, which was called by the Angel, before He was conceived in the womb.”
- Gospel of the Circumcision: Luke, 2:21
“For there is no other NAME under Heaven given to men whereby we must be saved.”
- Acts of the Apostles: 4:12
Sister Mary of St. Peter is best known for her work in establishing devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus. Jesus also revealed to her the virtue of His Holy Name, and urged her to make it known by distributing an article of devotion known as the Gospel of the Holy Name, which consists of a leaflet on which the following is printed: the short Gospel of the Circumcision, which mentions the giving of the name of “Jesus” to our Savior; a picture of the Child Jesus; the initials of His Sacred Name, and some invocations intended to inspire confidence, together with the lines: “When Jesus was named, Satan was disarmed.” Prodigies continue to sanction this humble yet well-founded practice to this present day. By the Gospel of the Circumcision, Jesus glorifies His Holy Name, restores health to the sick, converts the sinner, and bestows grace to the just. It is specially blessed with success in the case of dying sinners.
Our Lord made five promises to Sr. Mary of St. Peter in honor of the five letters, forming the Holy Name J E S U S, and through the virtue of His Five Wounds, to all those who wear* this little Gospel:
- Protection from lightning
- The grace to escape the snares of the devil
- Protection from a sudden and unprovided death
- The grace to lead a virtuous life
- The grace of final perseverance
*For your convenience, we provide this little devotion as a “business card”-sized pamphlet that can fold in half and fit conveniently into your pocket or wallet. Simply click on the above image, print it, cut it out and fold it in half! You can also tape or glue it after it is folded so it will be more “sturdy” and less likely to tear.
Prayer
0 DIVINE SAVIOR! through the victory You have gained over Satan by taking the Name of Jesus, deliver us from his snares.
JESUS, Son of God, have mercy on us!
JESUS, Son of the Virgin Mary, have mercy on us!
0 JESUS and MARY, be merciful to us!
Make us, 0 Lord have a continual fear and love of Your Holy Name, for You. never abandon the care of those who, by Your grace, cease not to love You; who live and reign, one God, world without end. Amen.
